Egypt

Work made in the winter of 2009. Part of a lecture I gave about a short trip with a friend of mine.

It was a sunday morning. I was lying on Arnar's couch. My phone woke me up. It was Ine. I hadn't seen or heard from her for months. She asked me if I wanted to come to Egypt with her. I felt extremely hung over and had enormous pains in my shoulder and left thigh. I didn't feel good, I wanted to go. So I said yes.

I didn't like being there. All this sand. And Ine. I felt how different she was from me. Work hard. Act normal. Don't be too weird. She also didn't like my look. So she took me to a hairdresser. I always considered myself quite determined. I thought I would never end up like one of these guys who let their girlfriend decide what they wear and how they look. After this trip with Ine I'm not so sure about that anymore.

Ow yeah, the pyramids. Ine wanted to go there really early to see the sunset. So we woke up at five to take a taxi there. But when we we arrived the thing was still closed. Then the taxi driver took us to some of his "friends" who were selling horsebackrides around the pyramids. I had brought a lonely planet and it had warned me against exactly this. But she didn't want to listen to me. So then we paid a lot of money, rode around town for half an hour first and ended up missing the sunset anyway. I only saw the pyramids for five minutes on top of this small hill next to a security wall. This is the only footage I got of it. We also had these two guys with us. I didn't like them. Ine did.

I had taken my camera with me to Egypt with the plan to make a small film for myself. But along the way Ine just kind of claimed the camera from me and started filming on her own. I didn't like this. Also the way she filmed. Pushing the camera in everybody's face, talking to everyone. I felt embarrased walking with her on the street like that.

But there were also nice moments. I really like this footage she took while we where in our hotel at night. I think it has something beautifull, comforting.

This was right before. She's showing some photo's she took of me. I really like the last one. It was a lucky shot. I wasn't posing and she wasn't looking for this. It's funny how photography often works that way.

The last footage I want to show I only filmed beause the taxi driver had put on a casette. I really loved this music. I wanted to have it, so I filmed to have the sound. It was our last night in egypt and we were just about to leave to the airport. While filming i really enjoyed the moment of driving through cairo at night and hearing this music.
